What exactly is Wi-Fi 7 and how will it change the way we connect to the internet? Read this article to find out.
What is Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7, also known as IEEE 802.11be, is the next generation of wireless networking technology. It is expected to be a revolution in connectivity, far surpassing its predecessors, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, in terms of speed, capacity, and efficiency. Wi-Fi 7 will not only offer impressive speed but will also improve the stability of connections and the ability to handle multiple devices simultaneously. Perhaps the most important point to highlight is the use of the unsaturated 6 GHz band, which will make interference a thing of the past.
Main features of Wi-Fi 7
Speed and Throughput
In theory, Wi-Fi 7 promises speeds of up to 46 Gbps, which is more than 4 times the theoretical speed of Wi-Fi 6E. This improvement is made possible using wider channels up to 320 MHz and high-efficiency 4096-QAM modulation technology. This means you can stream 8K video, enjoy uninterrupted virtual reality, and download large files in seconds.
Lower Latency
One of the main advantages of Wi-Fi 7 is the significant reduction in latency. This is crucial for applications such as online gaming and video conferencing, where every millisecond counts. With Wi-Fi 7, latency is reduced to almost imperceptible levels, dramatically improving the user experience.
Efficiency and Capacity
Wi-Fi 7 introduces up to 16 streams of an already available technology called MU-MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), compared to the 8 streams of Wi-Fi 6E. This allows routers and devices to communicate more efficiently, better managing data traffic and avoiding congestion by serving more devices simultaneously.
Compatibility and Security
Wi-Fi 7 will be backwards compatible, meaning you will be able to use your older devices with new Wi-Fi 7 equipment, although you will not fully benefit from the improvements. It is also expected to include security enhancements, ensuring that your data is protected with the most advanced standards available.
When will Wi-Fi 7 be available?
The first devices compatible with Wi-Fi 7 are already reaching the market, although it is expected that by the end of 2024 and throughout 2025 their presence will be more noticeable. At Visiotech, we already have the first Reyee devices with Wi-Fi 7, and we won’t be the ones to reveal that we might be having very interesting developments in this regard in Q4.
